▪Incendies is a Canadian mystery drama film adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play of the same name. During the reading of the will of their mother’s (Lubna Azabal), a twin brother and sister learn of some unusual last wishes. Amongst other requests, two envelopes need to be delivered to respectively the father of the two and a brother whom are both unknown. The quest leads the twins through the Middle East where they slowly learn of the horrific tales which is the life history of their late mother. This movie tells a very shocking story , perfectly shot and acted which makes the viewer fully immersed into the journey. Through flashbacks we learn about the hardship of their mother and unusual fate of their father and brother. The stunning climax of the movie will definitely shock the viewer .
This review will not complete without mentioning about the acting of the main actress Lubna Azabal who portrayed the character of Nawal Marwan, the mother. She is absolutely fantastic, no two words about it. Other departments including the haunting music and songs will definitely make you glued to the seats.
▪In its Middle Eastern setting, the film takes on a contemporary feel, and the scenes of battle, rape and torture are concise and pitiless. All horror of civil war in middle eastern countries is explicit in this movie. The screen play of this movie is absolutely chilling when it shows young adolescents with rifles, killing others of their own age when neither shooter nor target is old enough to understand the gift of life. This movie is much more than a thriller and succeeds in demonstrating how senseless and hate others because of their religion. Most people do not choose their religions but have them forced upon themselves by birth, and the lesson of “Incendies” is that an accident of birth is not a reason for hatred. After all the most happiest thing in life is to be together.
